Mac question from a PC guy

I need some advice from anybody who once ran PT on a PC then switched to Mac.... I'm having alot of problems with my PC (newly built to digidesigns specs)...alot of errors here and there and it's pretty much making me more frustrated as I'm losing money because I can't complete sessions... Do Mac users pretty much have it made...meaning, do you all not deal with all the errors that us "PC" users tolerate... A friend told me that Mac is very stable and I wouldn't have any problems at all as long as I had enough memory.... Right now I can't afford a $2000 brand new G5 but I have seen some good deals on used G4's.... I would love to hear from some of you before I invest in one....thanks in advance (Mudnoc from ATL)

RE: Mac question from a PC guy

i have not owned a pc protools system but have seen some in action. compared to my mac protools system, i wouldn't want to have to ever touch a pc system, i always had the feeling the pc protools can crash anytime and the engineer using one was constantly hitting save keyboard shortcut in fear of system failure. man, that's just not acceptable. with mac protools system you just open session, do whatever you do, then save when you're finished. you take it for granted that the system just works and don't have to think about it at all.

Well I was hanging out at a friends house and his windows based notebook wouldn't work right for a session so I pulled out my powerbook and helped session the finish, a week later be bought Powerbook. The guys on PC side have put in alot of time trying to getting their PC dialed and I think they have alot of success. But with a Mac you can just about turn it on and go. Wiz

RE: Mac question from a PC guy

I never used Pro Tools with a PC, but I gleam with pride when I say that my 002 rack System has only crashed maybe three times since I purchased it three months ago. Each time it crashed I was using plogue biddule to run VST Insruments. I'm only running a G4 867. The VSTs eat my processing power fairly quickly. Bidule is very stable in stand-alone mode however. I'm looking forward to upgrading to a G5. Also if you have a PC don't, even think about connecting it to internet. My friend's laptop got infected with spy/ad-ware and it litteraly took over his whole machine. He wound up having to back up all his data, srubbing the HD and doing a total retstore. Spyware is some diabolical sh*t! I've never had a virus and spyware doesn't work on macs. Knock on wood.

I ordered the 002 rack and a g5, but the 002r arrived a month before the g5, so I used it on pc, not indepth but i did some basic recording etc.. and it worked just fine on pc, had no problems at all. Having said that, it's all nice and shiny on Mac and apart from harness failure, it's been very very stable. I'd have no qualms about using it on pc though, but I do goatporn and video games on pc, the mac is pure music machine. It's very very nice.. as a recent mac person, and with introduction to MacOSX, it's amazing.

I ran PT on PC, then switched to mac. The PCs seem finiky because of slot preferences and all that Windows crap, but once setup, should run fine. I switched to mac because I get projects done on other mac systems, and they are a pain in the buttocks to open on PC. I am happy with that decision. The mac is very stable, and lots of cool plugins. You can get away with an older G4, say a 450, and upgrade the processor, and have a kickin' setup.

Well, I've been runnin PTLE for about a year on a PC, and only in the last 3 months have I got it stable. I've taken it off the internet and it's 'sort of OK'. Bear in mind I'm an IT professional with loads of Windows-based tech skills, so tweaking the thing doesn't scare me at all. But I've Mac'ed in the past, and do bass sessions for a producer running a Mac system, and in a couple of weeks when some money makes its way to me, I'm splurging on a G5 and doing it properly. Can't wait!

Well I've never owned a Mac but I can say that I've been running LE on my box that is not Digi approved for about a year and the only time I've ever had a problem is when I use to many plugs and not watching the load meter, you know that rest which I believe happens on both formats. Yeah you may have to do some tweaks to get the PC to perform how you would like it, but you're talking a couple of minutes for the tweaks. If I had my choice I would own both so that I could benefit from plugs that are available for both platforms. Just a thought
