morning everyone, ive just bought a volvo 850 t5 r and it has a smoky exhaust pipe. i was told there was a breather box under the inlet manifold that blocks up so ive gone a replaced that, along with two breather pipes that were blocked up. this asnt changed the smoky problem and have wandered if there were other ways to test the turbo if thats knackered. the smoke happens mainly when i let off the throttle or stopped at junctions. and help would be lovely and great. thanks james

What colour is the smoke, is it black/blue/white? When you start the car in the morning is there a lot of it? Could be a few things so the answers to those questions will help us narrow it down for you. Cheers, John

hi there good news,i may of sorted the problem of smoking at last. on the intake pipe, from airbox to the turbo, theres a valve/sensor with a large and small breather pipe from the crankcase breather unit.when i took it off,i saw that it was blocked up.ive cleaned it out and made sure all the vacum pipes are all unblocked. it seems to have done the job. the colour of the smoke was blue, which means oil burning. fingers crossed it has sorted the problem out. thanks for your time,if this sorts out the problem ll let you know :Banane09:
I am driving a V70 at the moment - on loan while my 240 has new front callipers fitted - and it is behaving in an identical fashion - blue smoke when accelerating from a standstill. I was wondering what the problem is as it seems fine otherwise.
well good news and bad news ive been driving aroundand the smoke still comes out of the exhaust every now and then.ive been chatting to a few friends and given the blockage of the breather pipes, the idea has arisen that there may be oil in the intercooler which could be gettin sucked in.ive checked the turbo and it doesnt seem to have much play in it.so next plan is to clean out the intercooler.:lep_mad: the smoke has gotten less since i changed crankcase breather and pipes, and cleaned out other pipes.ill keep you upto date in the next few days.

Sounds similar to what mine is doing... I'm still waiting for my PCV parts to arrive! Gotta wonder, if you have just bought the car - Why were the previous owners selling.....?
evening :O) the smoking has stopped, looks like the crank case breather had been the problem. since then it has had few electrical probs come up,nothing major though. the guy i bought the volvo from was selling it because of the smoking problem,he thought it was somthing serious.
