I'm doing a gig this weekend on the top deck of a sixty foot yacht, but space is limited. Anyway, I used this as an excuse to buy a cheep cocktail drum kit. I did this experimental video to see how they sound from a listener's perspective, and I'm real impressed! If you've ever wondered whether a cocktail kit could be used in place of a normal set, I think the answer is yes, and they take up almost no space. This is the cheepo GP Percussion set. The cymbals are crap, so I brought in an 18" Paiste for the crash/ride and some Wuhan 10" for the hihats. This was a one mic recording too. Anyway, here's the test vid.

Funny how life works... I used to do the music retail thing back in the day where we sold the Yamaha cocktail kits and I never cared for them much (though I was younger and dumber and though a huge drum rack and 10000 cymbals was the way to go too...) But a week or so back I ran into a small three piece group at a local haunt using one and they can sound quite excellent in a mix. I was quite surprised because as soon as I saw it I had the internal eye roll and thoughts of "this is going to sound like a toy". Does that kit have a real snare? Or is it like the Yammy with a snare that is cut in half and just fanned against the bottom head?

Party Cove! I'll be playing down at the lake (but on the Gravois arm, not the Grand Glaize) in a couple of weeks. I think we're down there 5 weekends this summer. Fun, but exhausting. :) Scott
