rear index plate light

I have a 850 T5 1996 and have just discovered neither of the rear number plates bulbs are working have tried new bulbs to no avail have checked the fuse all correct, wiring connector under tail gate panel ok. Checking Haines workshop manual it shows the white wire going to the bulb malfunction indicator (rear) but have no idea where this is to check continiuty of wire from there to tail gate connector.I have tried checking for voltage but can get no reading so i think there must be a problem in the wiring. Has anyone any ideas as to location or what fault may be:hissyfit:

Try at the point the wiring goes through the hinge area. Because of the constant bending, this may have cause a wire to snap internally. I would pull each wire to see if the copper bit in the middle has broken off as the plastic outer may be intact but the copper inner broken.

Whilst waiting for a reply I started checking the wiring and found that when opening the tailgate full I started getting a power reading but as soon as started to close it the power shut down< so I dismantled all the various to get at the wiring loop and lo and behold as soon as i pulled the white wire it came free and had snapped about 8 inches into the loom just as you said on the hinge section. Ne wire inserted and connected and all now fine Thanks
