Studied Inkscape a bit more and found maybe a little easier way to export. If you make each button that needs to be a separate file a group, name the "object ID" in the object properties, then you can perform "batch export selected files" (checkmark in the export dialog). And voila! All the graphics are exported to separate files with correct names. The catch still is, that you have name all the groups manually every time. EDIT: There is a possibility, yay! 1) Make a dummy group - just one object with no fill, nor stroke. 2) Group it 3) Give it a name Now when the user starts to make a theme element, (s)he needs to: 1) Outline preview the dummy group (Ctrl+NumPad5) 2) Double click or Ctrl+click or Right-Click > Enter Group to enter the group 3) Draw the element 4) Exit the group by: Right-Click > Go to Parent One of the possible drawbacks is, that it may not be always obvious to which group you're drawing to, so the user needs to pay special attention to entering and exiting the groups.
It's actually simpler than I thought - no need to make groups and later enter/exit them. The solution was simply to make the named dummies on a separate layer. Then do your theme work on Layer 1. Then switch to the "Export Helper" layer, select all and batch export. The exporter exports all that's visible in the selections - thus you've got a theme in one press. Note: For some reason you can export only once, the second time Inkscape gives an error and crashes. So for the successive exports you need to always restart Inkscape, at least for the time being. NB! I updated the first post with a link to the new file and instructions.

Hi, In inkscape i can see 4 layers layer1 ( art layer ) text layer default images layer backgrounds but no "Export Helper" layer ? probably something obvious ? can you help ? thanks for this by the way :)
That's the puppy ! :) Thanks Carbon ! All working ! woop ! Now for some themeness . Wow ! just tested it with the original images, haha that's just great ! awesome mucho respecto ! -------------------------------------- re original link, i get the older file from reaperstash in other browsers too . Download reaper3_theme_template.zip Uploaded On July 08, 2009 at 07:08 AM Size 404.52 KB Downloads 56
The template I have downloaded seemst o have been exported or consolidated as a single image some way. It would be great if you could upload the .svg in it's unconsolidated state, ie. so i could break into it to save it as several smaller files for Toolbar, Transport, MCP etc.

maybe unrelated, but if opening the file by dragging it onto the inkscape windows, it doesn't open correctly here, and shows only one layer; so maybe that's what happening to Tedwood ? Opening the file via file/open works fine. Obviously an inkscape bug. And thanks much to Carbon for this work ! I've an unfinished theme since ages, and nothing could be more helpful than this template.

clap clap clap, great to see my toolkit idea actually developed. You sir did an amazing, and probably time consuming job for the community. I won't use it myself since I use photoshop, but I'm sure it'll help tons of other themers
