hi guys after much debate, I just sold my Dual 1.25Ghz here's my situation: I can't be without a Mac, (can anyone?) So I just ordered a 17" PB (1.5Ghz/1.5GB RAM/5400HD/128MB VRAM) to get by till i get my new G5 Dual 2.5Ghz & 23" Aluminum Display I would like to know of anyone who's running decent sessions with a Powerbook that can pitch in and tell me about it. by decent sessions i mean at least 24 tracks with some plugz I'm not expecting to be just like a desktop but need to know how hard can the PB could be pushed. I will have an external Firewire 800 HD on a Lacie PCMCIA card and the 002R on the 400 Firewire slot plus all of the tricks regarding the partitions etc.... plus, i can manage on how to use the Reverbs etc... dilligently Now:______________________________________________ _____ can anyone let me know what to expect with this setup? what are your real world results? thanks for your comments and help regards, CJ

RE: What\'s Your Best Track Count on a 17\" Powerbook
i only have a 1.25GHz cpu on my 15" powerbook, but i'm able to do foh live mixing and provide monitor mixes for the band - all while recording the gig at the same time. granted, i only use 16 tracks but that's an LE hardware limitation currently, but with those 16 tracks i can do virtually anything, i never have to drop a single eq or dynamics because of cpu loads - i just use an external reverb (digital, via spdif i/o) which offloads A LOT of processing power for other things, compared to plugin reverb. oh, and congratulations on the pcmcia card decision, that's something you will begin to value as you shouldn't face any firewire trouble with your setup which is similar to mine.

I have a 17' 1 ghz with 1 gig RAM and a 15" 1.5ghz 512mb RAM. Mbox. LacieD2 160g FW800 My sessions are not that heavy in plugs/tracks so I've never maxed out in the real world. Tried the old Davec test, 5 plugs on each track as per instructions. Results were 18 tracks on the 1ghz 26 tracks on the 1.5ghz
