Hey, ive been recording on a computer for about a year now. MAinly using programs such as acid, ntrack, cooledit, and stupid little freebies to get the job done. Im thinking about buying a mac system with the digi 001 from wavedigital and i have a few questions.... #1 - what is optical in/out and spdif in/out and how do i work it #2 - any body using the motor mix what are your feelings on it? #3 - Is it possible to use an outboard multieffect processor to add effects to tracks within protools le thanks in advance

Optical in/out is exactly that. It enables you to hook up digital devices, such as ADAT machines to the 001. All at 24 bit. The 001 has optical "lightpipe" in / out on the PCI card, as well as "spdif" (looks like rca plugs) in/ out don't know about the motor mix, would like to try one, but is it really worth 900 us? I do know that it connects to your midi in/out on the 001 meaning you need another device to use other midi devices, which can be a pain in the ass. You can always "mouse drag" the faders, and then use a "pencil tool" to smooth out the movement. the outboard effects units are really popular here too. Lexicon seem to be popular. Just get one that hooks up SPDIF to run out of the digi into effects unit, back to digi via SPDIF. You can then add reverb, etc. at 24 bit, saving CPU pwer by avoiding plug ins... HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi, I use Motomix with 001 on the Mac..impressions ;- great, saves struggling with a mouse, and you can access faders, plug ins, aux sends, channel panning, and even make new Groups etc- in fact pretty much all you see in the Mix window. The manual is pretty crappy-bit confusing, but stick with it-you can get a mix set up in no time, and tweaking real 100mm faders for levels and Reverb sends is just great. I plug midi in/out into 001 box direct, -saves using up channels on my 64x box. Overall its good value, -sometimes you just have to buy things for the studio which don't make sounds!!!

Correction: S/PDIF (Sony/Phillips Digital Interface Format) is a digital signal protocol, and is available through both optical and coax cable. The optical ports on the Digi001 are for incoming and outgoing 8-track ADAT lightpipe or 2-track optical S/PDIF digital signals, the RCA plugs are for incoming or outgoing coaxial S/PDIF.
