I have created a volume envelope which looks like the original volume waveform, just below the track. Then on this envelope track i would right click and creat nodes to make the volume increase and decrease. I SEE the envelop increasing and decreasing but when I play it back its the same volume. ((i remember a while back doing this and it was a bit different .. same principle, create nodes and adjust volume but i don't think it made a separate track, but whatever i did back then it worked fine .. )) What am i doing wrong? thanks superkristen

Volume envelope solved ... Getting rid of extra automation lane not solved... let me expain .... I found a great youtube 3 part series on using Reaper automation. This explained how to use the Volume (and other automation effect modes). So i have the volume level thingy solved. I noticed it must have been an older video because it didn't have the "extra" volume automation lane under the track like in the new Reaper versions. ... instead, The volume lane was on the same track (like I remembered in the past). If I close the extra added automation lane I am using for volume, i lose the automation, so I can't close it to save space and have to "keep it in view". Since i like to use a volume automation on almost every track, this method takes up twice as much track screen space as the old method. Is there any way I can use the volume envelope on the same track instead of as a separate "lane" under the track? Thanks superkristen heres the video if U would like to see This is Part 1 of trilogy video on automation. Also, lots of other good youtubes on Reaper out there.
When you click on the "x" to close the automation lane, you should get a popup menu with three options: Hide Envelope Move to Media Lane Clear Envelope Hide envelope does just that - hides the automation lane - but it's still there, and active Move to media lane moves the automation envelope up so it's superimposed on the actual media item it's related to. Clear envelope gets rid of the automation and you'd be starting from scratch.
