Perhaps you need to consider some acoustic treatment. I like the bass traps I have up here.... info on my site.

RE: Out of phase !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if it sounds good again when you reverse phase on one of the overheads, why not just leave it like that? I have yet to come across a situation where I NEEDED to flip phase but it seems every recording book that I read or really experienced engineer that I speak to says that you should reverse phase the bottom snare mic when you use two mics on the snare. My guess is that if you are getting that out of phase sound at all you are doing something right so flip the phase on the bottom snare mic and you should be good. At least that's what I have read in many recording technique books and articles...

I would say some acoustic treatment, especially directly above and around where you place your drumkit, would definitely help out. But first mess with the placement of your mics. Try spacing them out farther away from each other and raising them up higher. Also you could try angling them a different way, use them to pick up the entire kit for a good stereo image. Mess with what you've got and see if you can come up with what works best. Good luck, jonnn

By the sounds of it I would flip the snare and EQ the lows/mids out of the HH mic. There's usually enough in the OH's anyway. I usually only use a HH mic to crisp up the HH when it's an important element of a rhythm, otherwise OH's do enough for me.
