Automatic Scene Detection in MPEG2

Hi, I have a hardware based MPEG encoder and a friend has asked me to transfer his old VHS tapes to DVD. Now my own DVDs I capture using 3Mb 352X576 with chapters every 5 mins. He said he wants scene detection but I have no idea how this would work. I think I understand that scene detection could work/help in encoding (inserting an I frame at every scene change) but how could i lock on a scene change during the authoring?. I have Maestro and spruce up, though I can use scenarist at work. Thanks for any info / advice

You will simply have to preview your clip and note the scene changes you want chapters at. I do not know of an "automated" way to do this in the authoring software.

so would I be right in saying that when encoders boast about scene detection (as CCE and others do) they are simply stating that they are intelligently placing iframes and dont insert any other "control" codes into the video?. I think maybe they can split on scene changes, when capturing and this might be what they are alluding to. I notice btw that Cyberlink powerdirector claims to be able to split on scene changes.
