Hi, can anyone give me the heads up on decent XLR cables for use with condenser mic? theres a 1001 different choices, make etc! something reliable and good quality. Cheers
Gepco or Canare star-quad cable are top of the line. About $40-ish for a 20' XLR. Hosa is the cheap stuff for $9.99 a 20' XLR. (Careful with it. Don't tug on it.) Or... DIY build Gepco quality from raw parts for about $10 for a 20' XLR. Stay away from the snake-oil salesmen at Monster, etc. (Monster is merely overpriced. There are much worse.) Anything cheaper than Hosa is probably best avoided. I hate building cables but I do it anyway (I can do professional solder work). I have some 20 year old mic cables now that are still in flawless condition. PS. Those Hosa's can have poor crimped connections out of the box and thus degrade the signal. FYI.
on the rare occassion that i buy pre-made cables, though, i always make sure NOT to get ones with molded plastic connectors. get the ones that allow you to get into the connectors. BabaG
Interesting as far as I can remember there was nothing on the packaging in the UK suggesting a lifetime warranty, but there again if you ever tried to get a Switchcraft connector replaced from anywhere outside the USA you'll understand why a US "lifetime warranty doesn't mean much. And although that was my first and last Monster purchase, I have so many friends who bought their guitar and mic leads that have had issues, maybe we get a different product outside the USA? Who knows.... One thing that did shock me was how much more expensive Belden products have become recently in the UK.
Cabling in general has gotten more expensive. I don't know if it's because of all the crack-heads stealing copper like it was crack, or if it's marketing hype driven by audio hipsters.

Me too. Some twat plugged a cheap jack like that into my guitar amp and then pulled MOST of it out after playing. No fun to delve around looking for all the bits that might have been left inisde.
