Thirsty!

When i bought my 10v auto est, I knew it wouldn't be great on fuel, but at 15-19 mpg it's getting ridiculous! It's serviced regularly, always with quality gear, atf's been changed, the brakes aren't binding they're all new. It's been like this for the the entire year or so i've had it, and at 15000 miles a year, it's getting expensive! I was thinking of putting a 20v head on anyway, but apart from that, any ideas?! :speechless-smiley-6

RE: Thirsty!

I have a 1996 GLT saloon with the 20v engine, Auto box. I get 21-22 MPG (according to the trip computer), around town with the gearbox in sport mode and a heavy right foot.... IE: I cain it at every oppourtunity. Also, my car isn't in the best of repair... It has a blowing exhaust and a pretty decent oil leak from somewhere, the engine managment light is also on... So if you can't beat 21-mpg then something must be wrong with yours.

RE: Thirsty!

O2 sensor or MAF sensor problem? These can both get a little tired causing poor fuel consumption without throwing a fault light.

RE: Thirsty!

Hi, suggest replacing the Thermostat and the Coolant Temp sensor ( the one which sends signal to ECU - on 940, there are 2 sensors.). Both these items will cause high fuel comsumption if faulty and both are not expensive to buy. ivor940

Thanks, but I don't think it's the thermostat, 'cos the engine warms up nice and quickly and once warm, the needle never moves from 3 o'clock. Gonna try the AFM, as i've heard they are bad past 100k or so and i've done 140k! Thanks anyway
