Recording second input on a track

Example: Guitar recording. Direct signal and mic'ed amplifier signal. Now we need two tracks for this in REAPER. Why not recording the two inputs to one track? -> input 1: ASIO Input 1 -> secondary input: ASIO Input 2 -> record -> recorded item now has two takes: Take 1 = input 1 Take 2 = secondary input -> overdub Take 1 = input 1 Take 2 = secondary input Take 3 = input 1 Take 4 = secondary input Editing Take 2 (mic'ed amplifier signal) also gives the same changes to Take 1 (direct signal). That's what I want 99% of the time. Cool timesaver for multi-mic'ed stuff. Less visual space wasted too. Tracker:

RE: Recording second input on a track

I always record DI and Amp'd guitar tracks as a stereo file, DI on the left and Amp on the right. Then I use this JS plugin I wrote to choose which side is being used. That way the recordings always stay "grouped" since they are the same physical stereo file ;) It's basically exactly like your FR, except instead of having 4 takes for two performances you only have 2, and you just choose whether the DI or Amp is being used based on the output configuration set up. The first recording input being the left input and the secondary being the right ;) Multichannel media is definitely the most logical way to handle permanently grouped sources IMO!

AdamWathan, absolutely minimal and useful. But what about a stereo recording wit a pair of mics fornt of an amplifier or DI-splitter-channels?

Really though, all this is covered by the "mulitrack edit group" FR that has like 300+ votes, that is the best way to handle multi mic'd stuff and still have ultimate flexibility over the processing of each source.
